From January 27 to February 10 the School for Peace of the Province of Lucca, in close collaboration with the Historical Institute of the Resistance and Contemporary Age and with the Municipalities of the territory, organizes a rich calender of initiatives in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
On January 27, 1945, the Soviet troops of the Red Army arrived at the Polish town of Oswiecim (Auschwitz in German) discovering the infamous concentration camp and setting the survivors free. The discovery of Auschwitz and the testimonies of the survivors revealed clearly for the first time to the world the horror of the Nazi genocide.
Every year, on this day the victims of the Nazi-Fascist barbarity are remembered worldwide with ceremonies, initiatives, meetings and moments of common narration of the facts and reflection. The purpose of all this is to preserve the memory of a tragic and dark period in the history of our country and of Europe, so that such events may never happen again.
